April 20, 2013 UGRR Day Trip to Canada

UNDERGROUND  RAILROAD
 (UGRR) TRIP  TO  CANADA
(9:30-7) $55  fee will include a wonderful coach bus, seeing  videos, receiving handouts, meeting great people, & seeing the following sites-

Step on guide Chris Carter will join us and give highlights of Essex County UGRR and  African-Canadian-History. We will learn about Henry Bibb, Mary Ann Shadd, Elijah McCoy, Delos  Rogest Davis,  (and we will see his home also!!) General Brock’s daughter, etc

Our first stop will be at the Windsor Tourist office after going thru the tunnel. Our 2nd stop will be at the UGRR marker in downtown Windsor which is called the Tower of Freedom. The wonderful artist is the amazing  Ed Dwight.*Our next  adventure will be the  Sandwich First Baptist Church where there is a secret trap door to the  basement where enslaved fugitives may have hid.  Here we will also learn about TWO  AMAZING  HUMAN  BEINGS-Henry Bibb & Mary Ann Shadd Cary. We are then off for Amherstburg where you will have  lunch at your choice of about 4 restaurants.  Then we visit the North American Black History Museum. There we will enjoy the extremely talented Tony Lucas who will role play Elijah “THE  REAL McCoy”.  We then go to the Colchester area on Lake Erie where we will see  where Elijah McCoy was born and other African-Canadian History. We then go back to Sandwich  where you will have freetime between 5 & 6. That could include eating, adult beverages, reading historic markers, etc. or any combination you choose. Bus must leave Sandwich, however at 6:00 PM.

    I met you at the Black Heritage conference the other week in Amherstburg. I write tour books and do tours in Essex County. My book will be perfect for this tour. Delos Davis home is also close by. General Brock’s daughter is buried in town as well (Black Girl).
